What is a child class

Child class: A class that inherits from another class, called the "parent class". This terminology is limited; prefer "derived" in C++.

Friend class: A class that is permitted to access another class'' private members. There are a couple of things that this is useful for, namely overloading stream operators and defining conversion constructors, but in general should be avoided like the GOTO.
