I have a FVF that has Diffuse and Specular color without a normal. I disable the lighting so the color is only determined by the vertex The coloring works fine, but the alpha does not. How do I use the Diffuse to set the alpha in a pre-lit vertex?

1) The top 8bits of the DWORD for DIFFUSE are the alpha bits.

2) How the alpha gets interpeted depends entirely on:

a) The TextureStageStates you have set - if you haven''t asked for alpha to be retrieved from the DIFFUSE colour and passed down the pipeline, then it won''t!

b) The RenderStates you have set - i.e. ensure alpha blending is enabled, alpha testing is as you desire, the blend modes are as you desire, the Z buffer is as you desire (i.e. usually Z write off, Z test on).
