Availability of wide surfaces in DirectDraw

Wide surfaces are off-screen surfaces that are larger than the primary surface, and they have only been supported since DirectX 5. I was planning for the classic application of such a large surface: the 2D level background, which the screen will scroll around in (in my case, around 2000x2000px). Wide surfaces weren''t allowed until v5 because a lot of hardware couldn''t support them, according to my DirectX book, Inside DirectX. This was written in 1998, though... does anyone know if wide surfaces are widely supported (ha ha) these days? Specifically, I would be curious to know how often 16mb cards support it.
