faking perspective
Hiya,
I bet everyone has seen Diablo II and are sick''n''tired of people mentioning that game, but I''m curious about the perspective feature in the game. How to produce such effect? I was thinking parallax scrolling with layers, but that didn''t work. It only teared up my buildings as you can imagine. I also tried making high layer tiles bigger, but that didn''t work either.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

I thought you only got the parallax when you enabled full 3D mode, in which case parallax would be just a side-effect of proper 3D rendering.

I''ve not played Diablo 2, but they could just move a separate layer of geometry at a different speed to the main layer.
Like one would with 2D graphics, but in 3D. I''ve no idea how fruity that would look though. Probably quite dizzying.

Funny you should ask a question about perspective here, since by definition "isometric" means that there is no perspective.
Diablo 2 has some silly tricks with actual 3D objects that looked really bad on my machine (Voodoo3 at the time I think). To me it just made objects wobble, so I turned off the 3D effects altogether. At that point there was absolutely no perspective effect and it''s a purely isometric game.

Heh, yeah I admit putting perspective rendering in isometric is quite pointless since isometric rendering is basically about ortho/axonometric projection. I was just curious how to do this.
Well I managed to get some sort of results by manipulating tile sizes according to their height and layer offset and adding a very small parallax scrolling effect. It worked ok, but I end up throwing the idea to trash can. I only got headache and got a bit dizzy from scrolling the map. Ah well... better to leave perspective stuff to real 3D engine.
