How does gl actually draw quads?

it depends on how you draw the quad.

if you have 4 vertices and draw to the four points, there are only 4 sides to the quad.

90% of todays hardware will tesselate the quad into 2 triangles and render them that way, older acceleration hardware can draw quads. Plus it does still depend on the driver, and ive seen a card with a driver that tesselated the quad into 4 triangles before rendering. Damn wasteful hateful lazy ass people >
