What are normals?

Pick an object of your choice. The direction orthogonal to its surface at any given point is the normal to the object at that point.

e.g. For an horizontal plane, the normal is vertical.

They are used in computer graphics to make lighting work properly (reflection of light depends on the orientation of the surface it reflects on), and to ''imply'' more geometry than there is really.
