Well, DirectInput offers several advantages that the other methods cant:

1. It allows full access to any input device and any special device capabilities, such as force feedback.

2. It allows direct access to the hardware, allowing the fastest possible interaction and greatest degree of control. It even lets you retrieve data from devices while your game is running in the background.

3. With DirectX 8, you now dont have to know what type of intput device is connected to obtain data from it. This helps reduce or eliminate device-specific code.

Hope this helps. /Daniel

somebody quoting the press blurb :D

i believe sdl uses directinput under windows (dont quote me on this though check it up)

personally ive never seen DI giving any benifits in any game WRT responsiveness, ie substitute DI for another method play the game,
does it respond slower? NO.
does it run faster when benchmarked? NO.

there are possibly situations where u will want to use DI, but i cant think of any off the top of my head at the moment
