Memory Mapped Files

Hi, I have a tile based map and the entire map is stored in a single compressed file. As I display tiles I have to decompress each individually in memory before I display them. I heard that using some kind of Memory Mapped file system with Virtual memory can eliminate me constantly decompressing tiles but only having to decompress each tile once on initilization and store it using the Memory Mapped concept. Does anybody know how this would work? Thanks for any help
