Smooth mountains? - about interpolation

I was wondering how to implement a curve interpolation in the d3d using vertex buffers. I mean I have a line connecting, let''s say, three (or more :-)) vertices and I want to draw between them a smooth curve. I heard about using polynominals, but I''ve no idea how to implement these in d3d8. Anyone has? To be exact, I want to create smooth mountains in my program using interpolation, which I suppose is very simnple (of course when you understand it :-)). Adams
