Multiple Alpha-channels

Is it possible to have multiple alpha-channels in a single texture file? If so, which image format allows it, and how would I tell DX8 to use one or another for rendering the texture? Also, if I load one big image with many alpha-channels into a surface and then break it into 256x256 chunks (using copyRects) will these chunks have the appropriate alpha-channels, or only the main layer is copied? The only file formats I know of that supports multiple alpha channels are PSD (Photoshop''s own format) and TIFF (which supports pretty much everything imaginable).

AFAIK, DirectX has no built-in support for the kind of "layers" you want, so you''ll have to load the data into several textures.
