How does a connection work between a client and server?

Please read something somewhere first, then ask a more specific question. I don't think anyone is willing to write a explanation of that subject here. Loog in the Articles & Resources section, for Networking articles.

EDIT: A good thing to read up on could be IP and TCP. You'll find the specifications here:
RFC 791 - IP
RFC 793 - TCP

EDIT 2: IP has no idea of the client/server concept, and is used to send (route) packages over the internet. TCP uses IP to implement client/server connections.
