Can you bind more than one texture to a polygon

yes, it''s called multytexture and uses an extension

-GL_EXT_MULTYTEXTURE

You could also, just set up two textures and allow it to switch from one texture to the other. For instance a crate polygon object could have two states, NORMAL or DAMAGED, with the textures being switched depending upon the damage level. MUlti-texturing allows two or more textures to be blended simultaneously on the polygon''s surface.

Just an addition to Filami''s post : the extensions GL_EXT_multitexture is no longer to be used. Use GL_ARB_multitexture instead. Moreover, multitexturing now takes part of the core of OpenGL (since OpenGL 1.3 Specifications or above)
