Delay during display mode change

With DirectX (and probably every other API), when you change the display mode (for instance, from 1024x768x16 million to 640x480x256), there is a delay for a second or two when the screen is black. The problem is, if I start an intro right after the display change call, you miss some of it because the screen is blank, and if the program just waits, it might start too late or have too short a wait for less advanced monitors. Is there any way to tell when this "black period" is over, or do I just have to have a static intro screen? (Language = C++)
