IN WINSOCK--- is there a way (in a WinProc or similar way of notifacation) to tell if there are any packets in the qeue that need to be recv''d?? or, should I just do a recv every couple of seconds?

There is indeed a way in WinSock to be notified via the WinProc of packets that are waiting to be received. Look at WSAAsyncSelect() and it''s associated functions.

select() is a better function in my personal opinion, i dont like asynchronous sockets.
