Best Data Structure for heirachies ????

Is there a ''standard'' data structure (ie general trees, binary trees,list, tables) that''s used to represent heirachies?? Ofcourse you probably can use any, but which one is the most efficient. I want to store my model in a class. Here''s the dilemma: should the entire data structure be "contained" in a single class or should each "node" in the hierachy be an individual object (class). I started using a "general tree" (each node has a list of chidren),and started running into complications. Any resource on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
