Certain bit depths not working with Direct3D

When I am initializing Direct3D i am using the mode currently being used by the computer. So when I change my resolution to use either 8 or 24 bits per pixel, I can''t see what I rendered to the screen. When I have either 16 or 32 bpp, I can see my scene. Why would it do this? Thanks!
