file type for terrain

IF I''m working with DirectX, and I use say an .md2 or .md3 file architechture for my world objects (specifically characters), then what would be a suggested file type for my terrain, buildings and static objects. Is .x the best? What is the norm for this kind of thing? Cheers Matt
