[java] Eclipse
I''m using eclipse 2.0 for my java IDE and it runs really slow some of the time. I have a 800 mhz computer with 128 megs of ram, so I don''t really think thats the problem. Mainly it slows down just after compiling a program and when it''s analyzing deltas for a save. This happens on a friend of mine''s computer aswell so I know it isn''t just me. Oh ya, I''m ussing XP pro for my OS aswell. If anyone knows why this happens and any solutions, it would be greatly appreciated

That''s the problem. You''ll need at least 256 MB to be using Eclipse or Netbeans. Those 2 are real memory hogs.
What he said, invest another 20 quid and double your memory.
You can tweak the startup parameters of Eclipse though by adding -vmargs to the shortcut and putting such things as -Xmx64m and -Xconcgc in there. YMMV.

i''m not sure if all plugins are loaded at startup, but you can delete the ones that you don''t use and possibly save some memory.

Hi,
Do you know, that just Windows XP eat about 80 - 100MB of RAM at startup ? That leaves you with some 28 - 42MB of free physical memory and that is hardly sufficient for ANY IDE written in java.
NetBeans use about 60 - 80MB of RAM usually and Eclipse is no different I presume.
My advice is:
________________
Get at least 3x128 MB of RAM before doing anything serious (especially visual GUI creation) in IDEs like NetBeans or Eclipse.
I''d recommend 512MB for java and windows XP.
A 800MHz processor won''t slow you down if you have plenty of RAM.
have a nice day

I have a large project in Eclipse at the moment and task manager shows that eclipse is using 54M. OS is Win2K. I have also used Eclipse at home in my old computer, which is celeron 374MHz with
128M, rather painlessly. I have never tried it with WinXP though.

Well,
You are close to the point where Windows does some serious swapping, linkki_ as W2K claims about 60~70MB at startup.
54 + 60~70 = 114~124MB, so you''ve quite reached the top.
And I presume, that you do not use Eclipse for GUI creation as that would consume far more memory (if you want to test your creation).
Java generally uses quite a lot of memory. So it is wise to get as much as you can get (512MB is quite enough for today and tomorrow).

That was my work computer and it has more memory. The project was also quite large(over 1000 files), and I never do anything nearly that big with my old celeron. However, according to my experience Eclipse does not eat as much memory as many other editors that are created with Java. I suppose the reason for this are the gui components. SWT seems to use quite a bit less memory than swing.
I did not use any graphical gui editor, text-only gridbag editing is more my style .
