extracting camera pos and up vectors

im just working through opengl game programming and im at the billboarding section. i tried the method there and its simple and does the trick, but when your not looking directly at the poly it starts to turn away. not noticeable at far distances but im pedantic. so i wrote a different way using the camera pos and up vectors which solved the problem. but its a little slow for just billboarding and im wondering if theres a way to extract the camera pos and up vectors from opengl directly rather than using a camera object and keeping track of these vectors. any ideas?
