If I have a vector then turn make a D3DMATRIX out of it by transposing it. i.e. D3DMatrixTranslation(&matrix,x,y,z); then do some matrix rotations etc on the matrix how can I get a vector that the matrix represents?? Can I directly access the matrixes columns and rows??

yes you can access the columns and rowns like this

// access element in colomn one, row one
mtrx._11 = number
// access elemet in colomn 3, row two
mtrx._23 = number;
