Release build Linking errors

I have been working on an engine for a while now in debug build mode. I just tried to make a release build, but I have got a load of linker errors, a la d3dapp.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _Direct3DCreate8@4, they are all to do with directX (i have included copies of various DX .cpp''s in my project, and all the header files are linked in VC++ directories dialogue menu.) I don''t know where to begin to solve this, part of the problem is that I don''t know too much about how the compiler and linker do their jobs...

Yes, the linking options are different for debug and release. If the debug version doesn''t have the errors, make sure the release version has the same libraries linked.
