Simulating moving spotlight on a large quad

Lets say I have a single, textured quad on screen 10meters by 10meters. I want to have a spot light effect on the plane however the vertices are so spread apart I would be unable to see the lighting effect. How would I go about simulating this spot light effect on the plane without actually using any lighting? Note: I want the simulated light to be able to "move" on a pixel by pixel basis as if it were a light source above game characters, not unlike the effect in Dungeon Siege.
