Updating Projection Matrix

i dont really understand how the projection matrix work , but i took the initialize values for my program projection matrix from one of the microsoft d3dim examples, and it seems to work fine over all my program.... so, am i need to update/change the matrix projection more than one time(initializtion) in my program or any program??? and if so , for what i need to change? The only time you ever need to change it is if your projection parameters change.
This includes things like : near and far clipping planes, field of view, orthogonal vs. perspective...
