Animation blending

Anyone have a good link or book suggestion on how to blend between to separate animations? So theirs a smooth transition from one animation like the idle position to another animation such as walking. So far I haven''t come across anything that helpful on google. Note that I''m working with the DirectX X file format. But in this case it really shouldn''t matter since the X file is just used to hold the skinned mesh data.

While i''m on the subject of animation, does anyone know what 9 way animation blending is? It''s in valves halflife feature list.
I would guess they have a pose for up,down,left,right,front, UR, DR,UL,DL....and then could blend between them. That would give them the ability to make a mesh that could point anywhere within a hemi-sphere.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
