im not talking about opengl backface culling ie
glEnable( GL_CULL_FACE )
this should be enabled on ALL cards, hardware t+l or other.
im talking about the user doing the backface culling itself, ie they check each triangle in the scene, dotproduct that against the camera + check the sign. + then afterward u send only the frontfacing polygons to opengl.
this results in about a 5%performance (varies) increase on nonhardware t+l cards
but is not recommended on hardware t+l cards
