What are degrees of freedom in terms of a 3D Engine? I keep seeing things like 6DOF and 5DOF... but what are they? Warning in life.cpp (8): const Happiness is declared but never used.

They are the ability to alter your orientation and move along the various axes (X, Y, Z)

Descent featured 6 degrees of freedom. You could rotate on and move along all three axes.

I guess being able to move along all three axes but only rotate on two would be an example of 5 degrees of freedom...
It's not what you're taught, it's what you learn.
Thanks for that.
One more question... If I have my engine which can move along X and Y axis (top down view), but can zoom... does this count as moving along Z? It cant rotate around any though.

I don''t think the ability to alter the view with zooming counts as a degree of freedom, not in the movement sense, anyway. What that would qualify as, I don''t know.
