If I want to load the information from a given file into my program when it is not ASCII text how do I do it?? I have so grid files which have a header and then an array containing heightmap data, anyone know of any tutorials etc that could help me out here?? Thanks in advance. Mark Coleman

You mean you want to write to and read from a binary file?

Binary file reading and saving in VB, in VC++.

I don''t recall him ever telling use which OS and/or which language and/or which compiler . If you would supply this information, it would make answering the question that much easier.

The name of the file format wouldn''t hurt either...

For height maps you could use bmp file. Then you can use a paint program (paint or psp etc) to design or view nice landscapes and use the colour define the height. Try Wotsit to get the file format for them.

use
pFile = fopen("filename.bmp", "rb");
to open files files in binary mode.
