3D space sim movement

Does anyone have any good sources of info or provide some tips for 3D space sim style free movement, preferably using DX8 but I should be able to follow OGL aswell, its just been a while? I''ve tried around 5 different ways of controlling my camera but I always end up with the same results, the camera rotating the wrong way when its already been orientated. For example I when I move the mouse left and right the camera pans left and right but when it looks up it still rotates around the y-axis and looks more like the camera''s rolling than panning. Can any help please?

The problem you''re encountering is called gimbal lock, it''s usually a consequence of trying to use euler angles for 3d orientation. Do a search on Google for more info, or look in Articles & Resources. A possible solution is using matrices or quaternions to represent orientations.
