Does anyone know of some good (reasonably large) web sites with free WAV sound samples? I am particularly interested in large archives to download.

Thanks for that link, edlima, I hadnt come across that page yet.
You might also consider looking for .XI and .ITI files, which are instruments for the XM and IT tracker formats respectively. Using a tracker program like ModPlug you can extract the WAV files from these without too much hassle. In theory you may have to be careful of copyright issues, although in practice it''s only likely to be a problem if the samples are of distinctive instruments (eg. analogue synthesisers, drum machines) and the copyright owner might prefer you to buy the hardware instead
