Just wondering whether or not it makes any difference if you make your class constructors or destructors public or private?

of course it will. if your ctors and dtors are private, only public member functions can create and destroy objects of that class.

in test.cpp: class foo { ~foo() { } };
> g++ test.cpp
test.cpp:1: warning: `class foo'' only defines a private destructor and has no friends

Definitely make them public.
