texturing question with NeHe Tutorials

I am getting closer and closer to understanding it all (thank god it is the weekend!) but I was wondering if there is a max on how wide and high a texture can be... It seems like as soon as I go past 256x256, the texture will not show up...? Ok, well aparently, I can have 256x256, 512x512, and even 1024x1024 but when I went off the square pattern with 1024x768, it gave me a white polygon, so sorry I posted the above information.
