I''m currently using the devcpp compiler from bloodshed, but I''ve heard many people say that Microsoft''s Visual C++ is the best compiler to use. So I went to its homepage and checked it out, and had the fright of my life when I saw it for like $500 +. Is it really that expensive? And for those of you who have purchased Visual C++, how much did you pay for it and where from? Thanks

You can get the standard edition for $100 for any number of stores (buy.com, bestbuy.com, staples.com, etc). I think there's also an academic version which is even cheaper, but it puts a nag screen into your programs or something like that.

But yes, the professional version, which only ships with the whole Visual Studio product package, is $1000 for the full version and $500 for the upgrade. Good thing is that the next full revision which comes out will probably be pretty much dirt cheap if you buy it as soon as its released as Microsoft almost always offers a substantial rebate. I got Visual Studio .NET Professional for about $150 after the rebate because I had Visual C++ 6 Pro.

If you are enrolled in college either full or part time, you can get pretty cheap edition of visual studio .net pro. The cheapest I've found it is here for $90 + shipping and handling.
