Hi, I was wondering Java can be used for this. I want to write C64-style games. Is Java fast enough to handle the graphics? Can it play wav and mp3 files? And, last but not least, can Java handle joystick and gamepad input? The reason I''m asking this is because I''ve had my load of crap with DirectX. Since I only want to develop simple games, DirectX might be a bit of overkill. --------- http://users.pandora.be/koen.van.baelen ---------

Maybe one more thing. The games should be able to run fullscreen. I''ve found a few games, but they are all tiny applets. Is this possible?

Yes it is possible. A good way to do it is to use some sort of background component to draw on (usually a custom JPanel), set it up in a JDesktopPane, and you can make it fullscreen or any size you want. Plus you can use menu''s etc. via the Desktop pane at the same time.

I am actually a Java programmer more than any other language, yet when it comes to games, I prefer OpenGL (which in turn made me learn C++). Java has it''s own 3D classes, but I never got into them and I am pretty certain that they would not give you any where near the power you can get from an OpenGL application, due to Java apps being a precompiled/interpreted mix that dont have the same control over an OS that a pure standalone application can give.

These days we do pure OpenGL in Java:

http://java-game-lib.sourceforge.net/

which gives us the best of both worlds. (Also handily gives us Joystick & Gamepad support amongst other things)
