Terrain Texturing

I know this has probably been covered a hundred times before, but with the search feature not working, it''s hard to find material. I apologise in advance. What is the best way to texture a terrain surface? I have created a binary triangle tree landscape which can be of immense size. I don''t really want to stretch a bitmap over the entire rendered surface, so have written a rudimentary piece of code that determines the type of land and textures and blends some small tile-like textures in real-time. Is this the best way to do this type of texturing? What successfull techniques are out there for texturing large terrain sizes? Regards Ray
