Are you sure its a 16 bit surface?? (not 24 or 32 bit)
maybe it's some weird kind of surface

Yes! Got it!
I was right about the casting...It didn''t like the UCHAR* bit. I changed all the pointers to surfaces from UCHAR* to WORD*, and it came out great!
