Communicating directly with vidmem is usually a lot slower than system memory - I have read it can be up to 10 times slower to read vidmem than sysmem, and it varies depending on the users video card - since you are only reading a few pixels you may get away with it, you''ll probably have to test both reading from vidmem, then flipping, and reading from sysmem and flipping to see which is fastest.
