I was wondering if it''s possible to intercept shell messages/notifications, possibly using windows hooks or whatnot. The reason I ask is that I want to create a utility that, when run, iterates through all the tray icons, and then creates a context menu that contains all those icons, and then removes them from the tray. It then intercepts all calls to the notification area and instead of adding an icon to the system tray, it adds another menu item to the context menu, and does the same for removing icons, etc... Anybody know if this is possible?

You can use DLL hooking, so you hook into every program loaded. Search MSDN/MSJ articles by John Robbins or Jeffrey Richter for details. Replace the ShellNotifyIcon with your own function that does whatever you want with each call, and then calls the "real" ShellNotifyIcon.
