what method should i use for my outdoors 3d game? bsp, quadrees, octrees? I mostly want to be able to ignore polys obscured by medium-sized objects like houses. i expect terrain to be somewhat hilly, low buildings, trees. Any advice?

I don''t think any of those you mentioned are any good for outdoors culling. I recommend reading Real-Time Rendering for some techniques that might be useful for you. If you don''t have the book you can perhaps find some of their references on occlusion culling on their homepage.
