fractal noise the make terrains

Hi! i usually made my terrain from fractal noise bitmaps( rendered from 3dsmax ). until noe they were good enough, but now i experienced a problem. The range of the height map is 0-255(monochrome), and my terrain becomes stairy if i make it with a great height difference. Is there any way to export 16bit channel pics, or how can I make fractal noise in my program? Is there any site, or tutorial? thanx

Nice result it gives too. And by the way, Googling ''fractal noise terrain'' turned up stacks (~9000) of relevant results. Keep that in mind the next time you get someone else to look for you.
