glDrawPixels

The OpenGL red book reccomends glDrawPixels if you want to draw a 2D image in OpenGL, but I recall hearing some people here on GDNet saying that the glRead/DrawPixels functions are really slow. Was that only for glReadPixels, or should I use some other way to draw 2D stuff?

I figured that too, but then the texture filtering comes into play, chich can seriously mess up low-res images. How can I avoid the filtering screwing my low-res images up?
