Why no new OpenGL library in Windows.
Microsoft only delivered OpenGL 1.1 Version, now the only way to use the extensions of 1.2 or above version is to get the function''s address through wglGetProcAddress( .) and then call it.
Since microsoft won''t deliver new version of OpenGL.
Why the video card venders Not to deliver 1.2 , 1.3 , 1.4 version by themself like under Linux ?
Calling through wglGetProcAddress(.) for every OpenGL Render Context is an annoying thing. I want the functions in the extension can be defined in complier time and only to test if it is valide to call when in runtime.
there are libraries around that make dealing with extensions really easy. they call wglgetprocaddress for you automatically when you call an extension function; all you have to do is check for the presence of extensions.
Microsoft would rather see their own graphics API take over and this is one way to help them do just that.
See why they had the monopoly ruling now?

opengl32.dll is part of the operating system, not the video driver. video card vendors do their part: they expose the card''s capabilities through driver apis to the operating system (windows). it''s microsoft''s job to get those capabilities to the end user (you), and i imagine nvidia/ati aren''t too happy about implementing parts of the operating system.
additionally, opengl32.dll is covered by windows file protection, so even if you did write a new dll and put it on your computer, windows 2000/me/xp would''ve thrown it away anyway and replaced it with whatever opengl32.dll shipped with them and/or their service packs.

So no one except Microsoft can overwrite OpenGL32.dll and OpenGL32.lib? I think I do''t consider so. If it was, then that is Microsoft is forbid us to do such thing.Microsoft has no such privilege. We can change anything we want except when to think over compatiblity. Why ARB don''t deliver new dlls per versions. Is that because of Microsoft holding the WGL extension? Though opengl32 is part of operating system, but should we must use that dll, why not have a 3rd dll, is it too difficult to do for ARB or does ARB think it is necessary?
I though Microsoft was member of the ARB? If so it''s even weirder why they don''t ship the latest versions.
Anyway, I agree with the statement that this is a marketing strategy of Microsoft. Obviously they are not going to promote a third party library if they have their own.
Are Microsoft now receiving priveledges for the use of commercial DirectX?

I just kno Ogl 2.0 is coming up . i can''t wait to see it :D .. i really DONT care if microsoft won''t have new dll under windows... there is one thing called PRODUCT QUALITY , by means of restricting their os to "only one graphic api" is not a good way to get custumers faith on their product. WeIrD !
Actually the reason for not being able to change opengl32.dll is they are trying to make the os more stable by not allowing 3rd party venders overwrite their "system" dll''s with one of their own. This was a big problem with win98. Now the thing is you cannot overwrite opengl32.dll BUT you can make a dll of your own and use it so opengl2.dll will go on your computer with no problems. In theory

Yeah, they are still a member of the ARB. Although there has been lots of discussion to throw them out recently. Which would be a Good Thing™
BTW, I''ve written a small lib that gives you full OpenGL 1.2/1.3/1.4 support under Windows. All you have to do is link it with your app, and include a new gl header. It will autoregister with the original opengl32.dll, and give you native support to the most recent OpenGL version your driver supports. It''s not a wrapper, so it doesn''t have any overhead. If someone is interested, I could upload it on my page.
