IRC client for a MMOG?
Hey folks,
I''m not the most technical of the team I belong to but I wanted to make myself useful beyond game design.
Are there any good IRC programs that can be modified for use in a massively multi-player game. We are looking to modifying an existing chat app instead of creating our own. Any suggestions?
Having just started doing this a few days ago myself, I''ve found the IRC protocol to be very easy to parse. I belive there are a few libraries on sourceforge.net, but the best solution will probably be to implement your own
Do a google search for "irc rfc" and you should find the specifications

Yeah, the RFC is a good place to start. If you hang around the gamedev IRC room you may get someone to send you their source code as well, between the rfc and browsing someone's code I was able to figure it out. Or you may try writing an echo server and connecting to it with an irc client to see how it sends messages.
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/rfc/ has the RFCs.

I gotta recommend IRCub if you haven''t seen it already. Adding IRC to your engine couldn''t be simpler.

I hear from Yahn B. (Network Engineer at Valve) that the tribes guys had issues with IRC and the fact that it''s so well "know" by the internet community. He advises against it in the speech he gave on backend services. Check Gamasutra.com. Plus how hard could it be to write your own chat protocol??
