I just got my first paying gig for video game sound and the lead asked me about codecs. Can anyone give me a link to a good page describing codecs for video game sound. It is my understand that it is for video but how does it relate to the sound? Does it do a compression of sorts? Deimos67 StoneEYE Sound Design

He is probably asking if you are going to utilize something like MP3, or Ogg vorbis, or any other compression/delivery format, and he is asking you, in an oblique fashion, how big the music files are going to be, as well. The answer to the former would be, of course, "Whatever you want", as long as someone helps you get the tools which will convert your music(I assume it will start as a .wav recording) to that format. For easy converting to MP3, I use SCMPX(search google), it''s small and quick.
For info on Ogg Vorbis format(like MP3, but free for the public to use,as MP3 is a copyrighted format and costs developers money to support), go to http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/ .

Perfect, thanks Krikkit. Since it comes down to the almighty buck, I am pretty sure out of the two choices you gave me, he will be picking the one that does NOT cost money. Thanks again.
