I''ve just been told by our QA guy that Windows XP will not allow you to save values into the registry if you are not administrator. This sounds crazy, so there must be some workaround ? I tried a quick google but did not find anything useful.

Hmm thats not exactly true, you do have permission on the local policy to allow users to write to the registry...
If the user your loged on as can''t write to the registry then you''ll need to run your program under another account. (i.e. prompt for a user with permissions)

Have to admit though anyone not giving permission to write to the registry ... well it''s a bit over the top, unless you working in a huge office environment where the support guys want an easy life

as a normal user you can not write to the local_machine only the current_user(you can try to add an user to your XP and create a new key in your registry -if in doubt) Whether it is important for your products install-detection etc. that theese reg-keys are present and editable for all users/the current user thats depends on your design. But this issue is relevant for all XP-compatible-software developers.

Yes You are absolutely right. It depends on the users environment. Thank you.
