Is TCP/IP something made by one company, or is it a general technology that different people design their own versions of? Is UDP the same way?

If anyone can be said to "own" the TCP, UDP or IP protocols it would have to be the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force. Which is to say that they defined the standards. I believe you can freely modify the protocols if you feel like, but on the whole, that''s a pointless activity, because you wouldn''t be able to network with anyone not running your version of the protocols.

i wouldn''t know much about it, but from what i know, i''d say IEEE owns it, cuz they did the standards, didn''t they? i dunno. correct me if i''m wrong.

IEEE doesn''t actually have control over many networking protocols. IEEE, as far as networking goes really doesn''t control very much beyond physical and datalink protocols. i.e. IEEE 802.x protocols for ethernet, token ring, etc.

The actual TCP protocol is standardized on RFC 793. UDP protocol is standardized in RFC 768. If you look up the RFC''s you''ll find that they were prepared for DARPA; however IETF took control over most of the standards, as the body that determines the growth of the protocols. Ex: they''re the ones working on IPng (IPv6).

Didn''t Al Gore say he invented the internet?
I guess TCP/IP is owned by our Vice president.

Yeah, Al Gore did say that he made the internet, but what he really meant is that he DISCOVERED the internet.

Anyhoo, I think I can get the answer to this question within the next day.
