Register Combiners

I''ve failed to find any reference papers for the regcom setup. I''m a little confused, what are exactly register combiners? I''m using custom vertex and pixel shaders, but when I hear of a multipass regcom setup I''m thinking of a higher level setup. How can I take advantage of the register combiners in my geforce4? Is the multipass simply the "phase" function in ps1.4?

does GF4 support ps1.4?

thought only radeon 8500 does

You cannot use Register combiners in DX9 (also dx8) as this is a card specific feature. However, rest assured that your shaders will be optimized for them by the driver.

Your right, I can't get that version to run on my computer. I'm not using 1.4, I was just wondering if "phase" is what some people referred to when they said multiple passes, or if they meant just rendering twice. Are regcoms just the instructions in my shader or are they referring to something more specialized?

Edit: evildecl81- then what's the point of them?
