Here it says: noise noise(x) Not yet implemented. under the HLSL reference yet I have seen that the function is used in various shaders. Strange...

The noise() intrinsic function is not supported on any pixelshader or vertexshader target, as there is currently no hardware support. It is supported, however, in procedural texture functions since these run on the host CPU. See D3DXFillTextureTX.
