FVF vertex flags

for most of my game I will be using the same type of vertex, untransformed, unlit, normal, diffuse, textured. However in certain points I am going to add a specular component, or a second texture. It doesn''t seem like DirectX8 will let me do this by using a single vertex type and changing the FVF flags - it appears as if I actually have to have two different vertex structures for this. Does this sound right? (it complains about the size of the structure not matching the fvf flags).
