In the book I need another example

When it talks about extents page 240, what does he mean. I have an idea but I would like another or many more examples. Why would I use this? Few examples if possible. Do I have to use it if I am just doing blt? What is the purpose of it. It helps me understand if I can visually see it in my head, so if you could explain it in that in mind it would help me a lot. For example, I was stuck on anchors for a bit and with some help from a poster it just came to me, move the image to align it during animation. Also I would use them to move a tile(my char) higher, lower, left, right on the ground tile. So basicly just move the image somewhere else. Thnx
