Creating 3d meshes in 3ds for dx

ok i know how to make a mesh and use uvh unwrap or whatever its called and map the faces to it but i can only use on bmp file for all the diff textures.. for example i want to make a ship that has a few diff textures for the hull a few logos and a testure for the coakpit but how do i map all of them to the ship with out having them all in the same bmp file or is that the best way to do it? Im a Idiot Savant without the Savant

in 3d studio max load the textures into the material library

1. apply an edit mesh modifier to your model
2. select the face(s) you want to texture
3. apply a uvw map
4. apply the texture to the face(s)

and repeat as necessesary.
